Brief biography of

MIXTUS CANTUS

The choir was originally founded 1963 as an independent society. As the name indicates it is a mixed choir with a mixed repertoire, from sacred music to traditional folk music as well as classical and contemporary music. Choir singing is in Sweden almost a national movement in which Mixtus Cantus has a strong position. The choir is well known and is regularly engaged for different official purposes as well as it produces concerts in its own name.

Mixtus Cantus has since many years a close relationship with the University of Music in Malmö. One of the teachers there has rewarded the title: “Honorary conductor of Mixtus Cantus”. Through the years the choir has employed its conductors among the fresh certificated musicians and hired students as song pedagogues. This connection with the University continuously provides the choir with fresh blood and keeps it youthful at the same time, as Mixtus Cantus is a step in the young musicians career. (One of the earlier conductors is now managing director of the Royal Opera in Stockholm.)

So far Mixtus Cantus has produced only one CD which as main feature contents a not before recorded mass, “Jubilate”; composed in the year 1743 by a Swedish composer
J. H. Roman. The recording includes a symphony orchestra and soloists.

Mixtus Cantus appreciates international contacts and has during the last years made several tours abroad and has performed in countries as Austria, Wales, Germany, Estonia, Greece and last time in Italy on Sicili. This year we are invited too Fuengirola, Spain. We are going to represent Sweden during the International days.
